CIPWG Invasive Plant Walk, Talk and Cut Events
In July, 2024, Charlotte Pyle and Rose Hiskes, CIPWG volunteers, lead 15 volunteers on a 2 hour walk around Newhoca Park, Vernon, CT, and discussed the invasive species present in the park. They provided education on identification and management techniques for several species, including Japanese knotweed, Asiatic bittersweet, and Tree-of-heaven. The group then performed mechanical management (e.g., cutting) of bittersweet and Japanese knotweed. Another similar event took place in McLean Game Refuge, Granby, CT.
The Preserve, Old Saybrook, December 2023
Kathy Connolly, far right, led a group of eight to cut Japanese barberry. The group learned to identify burning bush, Japanese knotweed, wineberry, and privet without foliage present.
Robbins Swamp, DEEP Wildlife Management Area, Falls Village, CT, August 2023
Peter Picone led a group of 15 people through a repurposed corn field. Spot herbicide treatments and mowing have taken out the mugwort and Canadian thistle. Seeding native grasses and planting native perennials will make this a meadow that appeals to monarchs, leopard frogs, and the New England cottontail.
